Kuruktag Gr
Type Locality and Naming
Kuruktag region. The name Kuruktag Gr is derived from the Quruqtage Series named by E. Norin in 1937. The naming locality is situated in Kuruktag district in Xinjiang Weiwuerzhu Zizhiqu (Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region).
Synonym: (库鲁克塔格群)
Lithology and Thickness
The Kuruktag Gr is considered to include three suites of glacial deposits, two suites of interglacial clastic rock, followed by Sinian-age formations. The upward succession [see the stratigraphic column] is: Beiyixi Fm (glacial, earliest Nanhuan), Zhaobishan Fm (interglacial), Aletonggu Fm (glacial, middle Nanhuan), Huangyanggou Fm (interglacial), Teruiaiken Fm (glacial, late Nanhuan), a trio of interglacial Sinian (Ediacaran) of Zhamokti Fm, Yukengou Fm and Shuiuan Fm, and Hangergiaok Fm (glacial, late Sinian). A part of the interglacial clastic rock in western, middle and eastern Kuruktag is a deep-sea turbidity deposit. In middle Kuruktag, the sequence is most complete with a thickness of 6292.8 m, in western Kuruktag with 5295.5 m and decreasing to 3564.7 m in eastern Kuruktag.

Relationships and Distribution
Lower contact
The Kuruktag Gr rests disconformably on the underlying Archean. However, in this Kuruktag region, the next older regional unit is the early-Neoproterozoic Pargangtag Gr (Beisainartag Fm is its uppermost formation).
Upper contact
The upper part is disconformably overlain by the Xishanbulak Fm (Lower Cambrian). Based on the overlying horizon's shelly fossils and trilobites of the Early Cambrian, the base of the overlying unit is inferred to be about 600 Ma. [However, the age of the top of the Kuruktag Gr diamictite below the disconformity is within Ediacaran.]
